History of the problem

Over the past two decades, as a result of anthropogenic load on reservoirs ecosystems in Moscow, St. Petersburg , Kazan, Astrakhan and other Russian cities, as well as on the lake Narač (Belarus) favorable conditions for appearance of sustainable nidus of schistosome cercarial dermatitis have formed. Schistosome cercarial dermatitis is a disease caused by the penetration of water trematode larvae into human skin.

Cercariae in most cases die in the skin, but in some people with weakened immune systems and children they can reach the lung blood vessels, causing hemorrhage and inflammation.

Schistosome cercarial dermatitis manifestations: initially the places exposed to water are covered with growing itching spots; within a few hours each spot which corresponds to the penetration site of a single parasite becomes swollen raised papules, in 2-4 weeks the skin manifestations disappear. When re-infected with trematodes schistosome cercarial dermatitis undergoes in a more severe form.

Despite the efforts in recent years, aimed at breaking the life cycle of these parasites, the attempts to eliminate schistosome cercarial dermatitis hotbed have failed. The experience of fighting such hotbeds in Europe and America leaves no hope on its elimination in the coming years.

The most promising is the development of individual security facilities from cercariae penetration into human skin and schistosome cercarial dermatitis preventing.
